Liberty Mutual Fire Safety Playhouse IdeasPreventing Fires
Learning Objectives
- Kids/adults learn to identify fire hazards in the home
- Kids/adults learn the importance of correcting home fire-safety hazards
- Kids learn that there are objects in their home that help protect them from fire
- Kids learn what smoke detectors and fire extinguishers do
Hands-on activities:
- What’s wrong with this house? Special wallpaper depicts fire hazards. Kids place Velcro Xs on the hazards (similar to Liberty Mutual placemats)
- Detachable fire extinguishers and smoke alarms – kids practice putting smoke detectors on the ceiling and fire extinguishers on the wall
- Dramatic play using a fire extinguisher to put out small imaginary fires
What to do if there is a fire
Learning Objectives
- Kids/adults learn how to keep themselves safe in case of a fire
- Kids/adults learn that it is important to get out of a burning building quickly
- Kids/adults learn how to stay low to avoid smoke
- Adults recognize the importance of having and practicing a fire-escape plan
- Kids/adults learn to meet in a safe, easy to remember spot
- Kids learn not to hide during a fire
- Kids/adults learn not to go back inside during a fire for any reason
- Kids/adults learn to call 911
Hands-On Activities
- Timed smoke alarm sound effect goes off periodically signaling all kids/adults to leave the play house – perhaps also red and yellow flickering lights to indicate fire
- Strips of gray ribbons representing smoke hang in an area of the playhouse and required kids to stay low and crawl under the “smoke.”
- A circle on the floor with a mailbox in the middle marked “Safe Spot”
- Phone booth near the “Safe Spot” for calling 911
- A bed so kids can “ be awaken” by the smoke alarm and get out quickly
- Signs with pictures showing how to stop drop & roll – ask kids to practice
Fire Fighters
Learning Objectives
- Kids learn that fire fighters help rescue and save us during a fire
- Kids/adults learn about the equipment that fire fighters use
- Kids use dramatic play to experience being a fire fighter
- Kids learn that they have nothing to fear from fire fighters
Hands-on Activities
- Fire fighter costumes, boots, helmets, masks, gloves, axe, hoses, etc (extras to replace damaged items)
- A fire pole
- A play fire truck?
- Fire engine siren sound effect – push button or triggered by the 911 phone call?
